The base of the story is about a little mouse named Melvyn, who gets taunted by other mice in the garden because he is different, having a big nose.

A heavy storm washes him into the life of Mrs Kettle, a retired Nanny who still had plenty of love to give. The bonding takes place in a town named 'Jelly Bean'.

From there on, Melvyn has adventures with much opposition from a cat named Hector and his owner, Mrs Berry. The story promotes acceptance of all differences in life.
